Publications

Publication has always been a central activity for the Academy.  In the past we disseminated information in four ways: through The Pipe Year Book (a tri-lingual publication including short notes and articles on pipes); through The Annales (an annual review of the Academy’s membership and activities); through our website and through occasional publications, such as Rapaport’s The Global Guide to Tobacco Literature or Suzuki’s The First English Pipe Smoker in Japan. In 2008 we adopted a new publication policy with the launch of the Journal of the Académie Internationale de la Pipe.  The new Journal is now the primary means by which the Academy disseminates the results of its activities.  It is an academic publication containing research papers and notes on all types of pipes and associated research.

Journal

The Academy publishes an annual journal which is free to members for the years in which they have paid their annual subscription, but which may also be purchased by non-members (order form below).

The first volume for 2008 was a single study of one clay pipe production centre in southern France. Volume 2 which has recently appeared, is in full colour and includes a wide range of pipe and tobacco related papers. These include articles on briar pipe production, the Norwegian long-pipe tradition, pipes as a medium for advertising, ceramic cinder trays for pipe users and 19 national clay pipe summaries.

Articles for submission should follow our Notes for Contributors and be sent to the editor.

Newsletter

The Academy publishes a Newsletter at least twice a year. The Newsletter contains information about conferences, new members, the activities of the Board, publications, subscriptions, annual meetings and many other news items of interest to members. It is initially distributed by e-mail.

The Website

The new website which was launched at the beginning of May 2010 will also increasingly provide a vehicle for making accessible substantive sets of data or the texts of papers and books that are now unavailable. For example, in the briar section of the Working Groups page it is now possible to download an early 20th century trade catalogue.
